WAR A CLOAK FOR CRIME.

It was alleged against Nellie Pearson, a woman of 34 years of age. at West London, that, posing as a lady of title, she robbed several women. She was charged with stealing a handbag containing £57 belonging, to Mrs. Legge. wife of Ma jo R. F. Legge, to whom she had appea.od for help for Belgians, posing as "Lady Lawrence." In another case she gave her name as "Lady Ramsay." Mrs. Emmeline Silcock gave evidence that Pearson, claiming to be a daughter of the Rev. Canon Hodge, obtained Iroro her a.subscription for "wounded soldiers " and Mrs. Laurie Playfair, of Park Road Regent's Park, related how accused m "Lady Paget," came to see her about a parlourmaid, and made a fuss of the baby whose photo had been in the newspaper. Afterwards a gold purse containing £8 ]{•« in cash disappeared. Pearson, in answer to the magistrate said, I am guilty; I gave mysejf up to the police at Scotland Yard." In sentencing the woman to twelve months imprisonment with hard labour the magistrate remarked that it was astonishing how people believed all the stories they were told.
