FEDERAL DEFENCE STORES. «> An interesting statement has been prepared by Major Ormiston, of the contracts branch of the Australian Defence Department, showing the enormous supplies of stores that have been required for the Australian Imperial Force from August, 1914, to November, 1915, together with their cost. The total amount expended during these 15 months by the contracts branch is £7,591.444, and this does not include cost of stores arranged for direct by senior ordnance officers in the respective States. Some idea of the magnitude of defence contracts nowadays may be gathered from the following items, taken, from the official statement : 935 000 pairs boot*, with laces. £557,000; 870,000 blankets, £600,000 1 harness, saddlery, and accoutrements, £384.407} 1,133,000 pairs socks. £81,000 ; 569,000 singlets, £178,000; 3,441,000 badges, £21,100; 653,700 pairs breeches, cord woollen, £532,390; 7,610.000 yards flannel, £503,000; 350,550 greatcoats, £525,487; 555,100 jackets, service dress, £520.557 ; 374,100 shirts, flannel and , cotton, £102,135. ,
