London, December 8.
The difficulties and cost of passenger traffic between Britain and Australia and New Zealand are likely to increase. Nearly all the services by the Cape have been taken over by the Government, and many passengers to Australia and New Zealand preferring that service, in order to avoid the Mediterranean, are unable to secure berths. The position is made more acute by the demand for vessels in co inection with Australia's wheat scheme.
Speaking at the annual meeting of th*! Peninsular and Oriental Company, Lord Inchcape said that the Government had taken over 42 vessels of the company's fleet at various times, and was still using 31. The working cost had so increased that it might be necessary to further raise passenger rates.
