TRIAL OF VOLUNTARYISM.
THE LAST FIVE DAYS. ——— a APPEAL TO YOUNG MEN. NEWSPAPER'S COMMENTS. Times and Sydney Sun Services. (Received December 8, 6.5 p.m.) London, December 7. The London press is earnestly appealing to young men to come forward and save the Earl of Derby's campaign before it is too late. The papers point out that the whole world is watching for the result of the campaign, and that the enemy is giving close and anxious attention to the matter. The recruiting during the last week-end showed an increase, but there was an undue proportion of married men. London canvassers are making ceaseless efforts during the remaining days to secure the enlistment of those who have hitherto made excuses for hanging back. The Evening Standard said that the Earl of Derby and the Labour leaders in the country are not satisfied with the results achieved, and it points to the magnificent results achieved in the Overseas Dominions as an object lesson to the young men of Great Britain. The Daily Mail says that the voluntary system is now being given its last chance, and it asks whether the young men of Great Britain will be worthy of the position she holds to-day. They can see that the reverses in Mesopotamia and at the Dardanelles demonstrate the insufficient strength of the forces there. It rests with them, the paper goes on to say, whether they will fight as .volunteers or as conscripts. If they come forward during the last 120 hours of the time allowed they may preserve the voluntary system.
