PROMOTED FOR GALLANTRY.
WATER FOR THE WOUNDED.
Writing from Gallipoli on August' 20 to his mother, Mrs. Gower-Burns, of Christchurch, Corporal Archibald GowerBurns, promoted from the ranks for gallantry in the field, speaks of very heavy fighting. Describing how he won promotion, he says: "I happened to run up against a bit of luck. Some of our men advanced too far, and were shattered by the enemy. Nine or ten wounded men were lying in a small trench about 300 yards away, and we could not take water to them, nor bring them down, for 36 hours. At the end of that time Corporal Cutis started with four water bottles to try and get through to them. I took four as well. We nad the run of our lives over the top of the hill under machinegun fire. It was worth it, though, to hear the wounded men thanking us. Two days afterwards the colonel sent for me and said he was sending a party of picked shots to the 9th British Army Corps for special duty, and that I was to go in charge of them as corporal."
