A SOLDIERS END.
DEATH OF CORPORAL STOCKLEY.
The manner in which Corporal Fred. Stockley, a well-known and popular member of the Auckland Mounted Rifles, met his death on Gallipoli, is told in a letter written by one of his comrades, Trooper F. Best, oil July 23:—" Yesterday, while we were coming off duty as reserves on the top of the hill," says Trooper Best, " the enemy started to pour shrapnel into us, and unfortunately Fred, stopped one or two pellets from these. Like most of our cusudties that prove fatal, Fred's death was ilmcyst instantaneous. His old section mates buried him last night at dusk along side another old tent mate of ours, Harrison. It might please Mrs. Stocklev €6 know that the major described Fred, as the most conscientious man in the squadron. We all miss him very much, and our only consolation is that his end was painlessly sudden. We intend to have a stone engraved and erected to him.''
