WAR PROPHECIES.
A curious prophecy is making the rounds of the French newspapers. ' For several years a well-known French painter of battles and military life employed a native of Brittany for his model. On© day during last July, about two ■weeks before the beginning of hostilities, this model arrived in the studio in a very dejected state of mind, and, in answer to a question, announced in a grave voice: " We are going to have war." " Stop your fooling and get ready," said the painter. ■ " War will be declared on August 2," continued the model in a melancholy tone. "Well, if you know when war will betrin, you probably know also when it will end." mocked the artist. x "Yes," was the imperturbable reply, "I can—the war will come to an end on May 22." • ''All Tight, then, come and see me on May 23, wo will see then if you were correct, and will drink, in any case, a bottle of wine," declared the painter, trying 1 to put an end to the conversation and start working. " Impossible, I could not come," came a sad announcement. "Why not?" " Because I shall be killed in the second half of November." By a strange coincidence, war was declared on Aucrust 2, and the pronhet fell ; on the battlefield on November 27. | It remains to be seen whether the last I part of his prophecy will also hold good. I Too bad, though, that he fctfgot to add itlifltacearj
