POLICE COURT NEWS.
SEVERAL MINOR CASES. A max named Gordon Davis, a quartermaster on the steamer Kaikoura, was charged before Mr. E. W. Burton, S.M., in the Police Court yesterday with assault- ■ ing a fireman named Robert Thompson. After hearing evidence the magistrate fined the accused £1. Two men named Stephen South and David Kelly admitted a charge of using threatening behaviour in the bar of the Grosvenor Hotel on Monday night. Convictions were recorded in both cases. South was fined £2, in default seven days, and Kelly was fined £1, in default 24 hours. William McKee pleaded not guilty to charges of negligently driving a cart in Khyber Pass Road on August 13, of being in charge of a horse and cart while drunk, and of driving a cart at night without a light. The charges were the outcome of a collision between the cart driven by the accused and a tramcar. Evidence was given at length bv the tramcar ofllcials and the police. On the first charge the accused was fined £2 and was ordered to pay £3 Is costs. He was convicted on the two remaining charges. *
In a report of a case heard in the Police Court on Friday, the name of Mr. Thomas Donovan was mentioned in connection with a charge against another person of selling liquor without a license. Mr Donovan had no connection with an incident mentioned during the hearing of the charge in regard to which it was stated that two men had broken a hasp on a door and a drawer in the saloon of a vessel.
