ATHLETICS.

%■ AUCKLAND AMATEUR CLUB.

~",.Tae report which.will be presented at the animal J meeting of the Auckland Amateur Athletic and Cycling A Club • -this evening states that the past season was a very light one as far as the club was concerned, as the committee deemed it advisable to hold less carnivals owing to the unsettled conditions prevailing. A night meeting, at which three races were contested, and an afternoon gathering, were the only functions held by the crao during the season. The club was reluctantly compelled to hold the latter carnival at the Auckland Trotting Club's ground. .lipHGin. owing to the prohibitive charge demanded by the City Council for tne use ci the Domain Cricket Ground. The attendance at this meeting was much less than anticipated, and, in. consequence, the finances of the club suffered to the extent of £5 14s 6:(. The membership subscriptions have fallen away considerably, ■ but this was only to be expected,' a3 close on 50 members are away at , th& front -fighting for their country. Nevertheless, the finances for the season are very; satisfactory, the receipts being ,£77. 12s, and the expenditure £54 15s 6<i, leaving a balance of £22 16s 6d. The Sportsman Cup was competed for at the second carnival, and was won by W. R. Cox, and the cup given by Mr. E. S. Kohn for the most points scored during the season was -won by C Roberts. The Victor. Ludorum was not competed for ; last season. The form displayed by the younger members of the club was very promising, and augurs well for the future.

, The club was represented at the New Zealand Championship Meeting, held at Wellington, by A. A. Edwards, C. C. Francis, 1' E V, • <»dhaxn t and C. C. Laurie, but they did not gain any honours. The committee feel proud of the response members have made to the call of the Empire for assistance in the present great war. Amongst those who have enrolled are the president, Lieutenant-Colonel Plugge, Major Stuckey, Sergeant Fordham, R. J. Bond, W. J. Glass, R. Roberts, J. J. Lawson, L. Brett, jd. A. Tiernan. F. Williams—have Riven their lives bravely and readily for the t-mpire and, unfortunately, there is some doubt as to Major Stuckey's fate. They were popular members of the club, both as competitors and officials. The committee also regret to report the death of one of its strongest supporters, Mr. W. Coleman, who at latter years had been a vice-patron of the club. The committee wishes to place on record its best thanks and hearty appreciation for the valuable assistance given by the various officials and supporters during the season also to the press for the support it has given, at all times to further the interests of the club.
