COMMITTED FOR SENTENCE.

INSURANCE MANAGER'S , CRIME.

[bt telegraph.—PßESS assocutiox.] DcxsDDf, Wednesday. The police proceeded to-day with; two of the charges preferred against Robert Sproule Menzies, late manager of the insurance department of Messrs. -Neill and Co. The first charge was of stealing £62 odd, and the the seconjd of stealing £77 odd. ' Both these charges indicted accused of theft from his employers. Mr. Hay, for defendant, while stating that he was instructed to plead guilty, pointed out that the evidence showed that the moneys belonged to other insurance companies, for which Neill and Co. were agents, and that the charge of theft from an employer was much more serious, involving 14 years' imprisonment. The magistrate allowed the matter of pleading to stand over until-he had considered on what charge accused should be committed.

In the afternoon the magistrate decided to amend the charges to read that accused, being the servant of Neifl. and Co., did steal £62 5s 3d and £77 18s 6d, the property of the Union Insurance Society of Canton and the Indemnity Mutual Marine Insurance Company. 'Accused leaded guilty, and was committed to the Supreme Court for sentence.
