ASPHYXIATING GAS.

EXPLOSIONS ON STEAMER.

FORTY PERSONS AFFECTED.

NO LIVES LOST.

(Received September 29. 10.10 p.m.)

London, September 29.

The commander of the steamer Sant Anna, which recently arrived from the Azores and reported that a number of dynamite explosions had taken place on board, says that the explosion were due to asphyxiating gas.

Forty passengers were overcome by the fumes, but they recovered. When the first fire was nearly extinguished a second explosion occurred. The heat was so intense that several plates of the liner melted.

The captain has 18 pieces of fuse which he found in the water.
