DRAINAGE SYSTEM.

THE PUMPING STATIONS.

TRIBUTE TO ENGINEER.

The Auckland and Suburban Drainage Board met last night. There were present: The Mayor, Mr. J. H. Gunson, Messrs. A. J. Entrican, P. J. Nerheny, H. D. Heather, P. McElwain, E. J. Carr, J. Trevethick, R. T. Michaels, G. Knight, F. W. Brinsden, J. Dempsey, and J. Burton.

The works report stated that work on the Mount Albert section of the main sewer would probably not be completed until early next year, although the contract expired on October 3. The delay, however, had not been prejudicial to the interests of any of the contributing local bodies. In view of that fact, and the state of the board's finances, it was deemed inadvisable to urge the contractors to accelerate their rate of progress. Work had commenced on the reconstruction of the Orakei culvert. The plans and specifications necessary for the calling of tenders for the construction of the four pumping stations required for drainage of the iow level areas within the city were being drafted, and would probably be submitted to the board at its next meeting. Dealing with the Orakei works, it was stated that the average daily discharge of sewage during the last five weeks had been 9£ million gallons, the maximum discharge for any 24 hours being that for the period ending 9.30 p.m. on September 20. when million gallons were discharged. The report was adopted, a motion being carried authorising the Works Committee to deal with the pumping station plans when completed. The following resolution, moved by the Mayor, was adopted :—"That the" best thanks of the board be tendered to Mr. W. E. Bush for his skilled services to the board since its inception. Throughout a period of seven years the board's drainage system has been installed, and, at a cost of £400,000. has born carried satisfactorily to an advanced stage. In this important work Air. Bush's services have been marked by zeal and engineering skill of a high order. He now retires from the board's services owing to the svstem having reached a stage at which his professional services are now no longer required."
