The High Commissioner, cabling under date London, September h 27, forwards the following despatch from Sir John French:— " 4 " North-west of Hulluch we repulsed a number of counter-attacks inflicting heavy loss on the enemy. East of Loos our offensive is pro- * gressing. - Our captures now number 53 officers and 2800 men, 18 -- r < guns, and 32 machine-guns. The enemy abandoned a considerable _■ quantity of material, which has not yet been classified. ;fv' " All positions east of Souchez captured by us have been mainf , tained. " North of Arras the situation has not been modified. The enemy r are only counter-attacking feebly against the new positions we occupy. V 5: The prisoners in this region exceed 1500." Artois is an old province of France, which, ■with part of Picai il> i the - Y£-i* present department of Pas-de-Calais.
