GERMAN LINE BROKEN IN THE CHAMPAGNE REGION.
FRENCH ADVANCE OVER FRONT OF FIFTEEN MILES. CAPTURE OF 12,000 PRISONERS, GUNS, AND MACHINE-GUNS. Paris, September 26. It is officially announced that a terrific battle is proceeding in the Champagne region. The French penetrated the German lines along a front of fifteen miles to a depth of two and a-half miles at some points. They captured 12,000 Germans, in addition to guns and machineguns. Stubborn fighting continues. The Champagne region of France 'was formerly one province, but the term is now a somewhat indefinite one, comprising the greater part of the four departments of Ardennes, Marne, Aube, and Haut-Marne, and portions of Aisne, Seine-et-Marne and Yonne. The district consists largely of chalk downs, and is known for its grapes, particularly the eastern slope of the higher section of those downs overlooking the plain of Chalons from Rheims to Vertus. The French advanced east of the River Suippe, which joins the Aisne north of Rheims.
