BRITISH VICTORIES ALONG THE ROADS TO LILLE.
ADVANCE OF TWO AND A-QUARTER MILES. CAPTURE OF 600 YARDS OF TRENCHES NEAR HOOGE. The following despatch has been received from Sir John French, under date of Sunday morning:—■ '' We attacked the enemy south of La Bassee Canal and east of Grenay and Vermelles on Saturday morning. We captured his trenches on a front of over five miles, penetrating his lines in some places for 4000 yds. We captured the western outskirts of Hulluch, also the village of Loos, mining works round it, and Hill 70. li Other attacks were made north of La Bassee Canal, which drew strong enemy reserves towards these points, where hard fighting occurred all day long, with varying success. At nightfall the troops north of the canal occupied the positions of the morning. i- We made another attack near Hooge, on either side of the Menin Road. The attack north of the road resulted in the occupation of Bellewarde Farm and the ridge, but the enemy retook these positions. The attack south of the road gained 600 yds. We consolidated the ground won- " Up to the present 1700 prisoners have been taken, with eight guns and several machine-guns. *' The report in Friday's German communique that our attempted attack on Thursday south of La Bassee Canal failed is not true. No attack was attempted."
