OBITUARY.
DEATH OF KEIR HARDIE. By Telegraph Association— Loxdojt, September 26. The death is announced of Mr. J. Keif Hard:©, MP., the cause being pneumonia, "-.j. The late Mr. Keir Hardie was 59 year? of age. He was born in a Lanarkshire ~' mining village, and he worked in the mines from his 7th till his 24th year. Ha . : never went to school, but he educated himself by making use of his leisure time below ground. At the age of 23 he became secretary to the Lanarkshire Miners* Union, and at 25, he became editor of a provincial newspaper. He was first elected to Parliament as member for South-West Ham in 1892. He was always unconven-. tional in dress; his historic deer-stalker cap at first shocked the House of Com' mons. He lost his seat in 1895, but in 1900. he was elected for Merthyr-TydviLjVg and he retained this seat until-his deathMr. Keir Hardie visited New Zealand in 1908. He was formerly chairman of th» Labour Party, and latterly he has bee* Leader of the Independent Labour Party.
