NEWS SUMMARY.
Auckland: Dominion Day -mas observed in Auckland yesterday. An abnormally largo supply of eggs is reaching the Auckland market. A total of £15,443 73 5d has been subscribed to the Herald War Fund. There were 224 males and 14 females in the Auckland gaol at the end of last week. Reclamation work in connection with the new waterfront railway is to be continued shortly after a suspension of some weeks An appeal has been made by the Mayoress of Auckland for money with which to purchase Christmas gifts for New Zealand soldiers on active service. New Zealand: A Swede committed suicide in Westland HospitaL A man named McLeod was drowned at Patea on Sunday. An invalided soldier. Corporal C Oomyn, was killed on the railway near Wanganui. The Minister for Defence states that he believes that the sixth reinforcements have reached Gallipoli. A long discussion took place in the House of [Representatives last night on the Trentham Commission's report. The steamers Tofua and "Willochra are bringing back further large contingents i of sick and wounded soldiers to New Zea- j land. I The War: I Upwards of 20.000 Welsh miners axe j threatening to strike. | On the Western front the allies took ! over 20,000 prisoners in two days. Recruiting in the Newcastle district- has been suspended owing to an outbreak of smallpox. Berlin advices admit repulses northeast of Loos, and also north of Perthes, with heavy losses. The Germans fell back two-and-a-half miles before the allies' advance in the Champagne district. The Italian troops are now dominating the great high road through Plezzo to Tarvis, by way of Predil Pass. The Italians captured Suldenspitze, a mountain nearly 12,000 ft high in the Tyrol, although it was strongly held. The Bulgarian Minister declares that the mobilisation must not be considered a step towards war. Diplomatic negotiations will continue. An uninterrupted service of trains between Constantinople and Bulgaria is causing surprise in view of the admitted scarcity of .coal in Turkey. Awful stories of cruelty to Armenians are related by eye-witnesses. Besides many thousands who were killed, hali-a-miiiion Armenians were deported. The British ships shelled positions at Seijst, Duihbergen, ■ and Knock, as well .as coastal batteries on the sand dunes from the Dutch frontier to Westende. The.allies captured the village of Souchez and advanced eastward. At La Folic and • Thelus 1000 prisoners were taken. Fighting continues along ,the whole Western "■"'' front. '"":■! •" The Salonika correspondent of the Times states that the Young Turks are threatening Constantinople with guns in order to keep the disaffected population ■ "in'lawef"'-.' •"' ■'[.'-.. ■ An eye-witness states that the women who were deported by the Turks from ISzerpum province left Kharput Plain without food, and died at the rate of 50 or 60 a day. Austria has replied to the American , Note regarding - munitions sent to the allies, declaring that she has not changed - hex. opinion regarding the American export of munitions. V '-A deputation of Newcastle workers ■• visited the western .front and conversed ■with the officers and men in the trenches, thus learning the necessity for a more ' adequate supply of ammunition. A Rotterdam message states that there are persistent reports that the AngloFrench armies have achieved successes, and are steadily pushing forward- Movements behind the enemy's Enes point to : something in the nature of a retreat.
