THIRTEEN CANDIDATES.
EIGHT ALREADY CHOSEN.
THE MAYORESS NOMINATED
The amalgamation of various interests has reduced the number of candidates in connection with the Queen Carnival, originally fixed at 20, to 13. Eight candidates have now been dominated. Two more candidates were nominated on Saturday.' An invitation was extended by the committee of the combined trades and labour unions and the friendly societies to the Mayoress of Auckland, Mrs. J. H. Qunson, to accept nomination as its" candidate, and Mrs. Gunson 1 acceded to this request. The committee had previously announced its selection of the Belgian colours. The selection of a candidate to represent the Public Service was referred to the ladies of the telephone exchange, and they nominated Miss Victoria Bridges, choosing blue and black as her colours. Campaign in the Country. Five organisations have still to nominate candidates. The combined sports bodies will meet to-morrow evening to select a candidate. Proposals have been made that one candidate, a " Red Cross Girl," should be supported by the suburban districts, the women's societies, and the schools. A preliminary meeting was held on Saturday morning, when various aspects of the matter were reviewed. The meeting was finally adjourned till tomorrow afternoon at the office of the chairman, Mr. W. R. Holmes. Steps are now being taken to organise the country districts, which are to nominate three queens. The Mayor of Hamilton has convened a meeting to be held in Hamilton to-morrow afternoon to arrange for the nomination and support of the Queen of the South. He has invited the Mayors of other boroughs and the district chairmen of the Waikato to be present. Arrangements are being made for the campaigns in the north and east districts. List of Candidates. The following candidates for the honour of queen of the carnival have been nominated :—
Wholesale Trades : Mrs. W. H. Parkes, blue and white. Licensed Victuallers : Mrs. A. S. Bankart, pink. "Soldiers": Mrs. J. A. Wallingford, red, white, and blue. •' Waitemata" : Mrs. W. J. Napier, blue and gold. Retail Trades: Mrs. Bertram Dawson, black and white. Commerce and Professions : Mrs. E. N. R. Russell. — Labour and Friendly Societies : Mrs. J. H. Gunson, Belgian. Public Service : Miss Victoria Bridges, blue and black.
Commercial Travellers' Candidate. A meeting of about 150 members of the Auckland Commercial Travellers' and Warehousemen's Association and representatives of wholesale houses and factories was held at the Commercial Travellers' Club Rooms on Saturday evening. Mr. W. Garrett presided. A committee was formed to promote the candidature of Mrs. W. H. Parkes, and a number of subcommittees were appointed. The following officers were elected —Chairman of General Committee, Mr. W. Garrett; vice-chairman, Mr. A.. G. Graham treasurers, Messrs. E. W. Evans and A. G. Cooke; organising secretary, Mr. C. J. Phillips; assistant secretary, Mr. S. Moses ; auditor, Mr. A.* E. Warnock. The chairman announced that a meeting of ladies will be held on Tuesday evening, at the special committee room, in Hardi" Bros.' Building, Queen Street, when subcommittees will be appointed. Other Committees. Various sub-committees have been appointed by the executive of the combined retailers, whose candidate is Mrs. Dawson, wife of Captain Bertram Dawson. • A general meeting will be held on Wednesday evening to meet Mr. Owen Cardston, organiser-of the carnival, who is expected to arrive in Auckland to-day. Four sections of land in Ladies' Mile Road. Kemuera, have been given by Messrs. Bertram and Charlton Dawson, to be either sold or raffled for the Retailers' candidate. The Ladies' Committee for the "Soldiers' Queen," will meet at Smith and Caughey's at 2.30 p.m. The executive of the Trades and Labour Union's and the Friendly Societies' Committee will meet Mr. Cardston at 3 p.m. to-morrow.
ALLIED NATIONS FETE.
SUCCESSFUL GATHERING.

The Town Hall presented a gay and busy scene on Saturday, when the Allied Nations Fete, arranged by the Girls' Realm Guild, in aid of sick and wounded New Zealand soldiers, was continued. Dur-. ing the afternoon and evening crowds of citizens visited the hall, the floor of which was at times so thronged that hundreds of people ascended to the galleries. From there they watched the kaleidoscopic scene, which was further brightened by the uniforms of invalided soldiers, who were present by invitation, and of nurses, ambulance men, stallholders, and assistants, and the fancy dresses of performers awaiting their turn in the programme which was being presented in the concert room. A steady business was being done at the stalls, which were decorated in the national colours of the allied nations, including those of the British Dominions. ' Prior to reopening in the evening, a procession of; 12 motor-cars, lent by Auckland taxicab drivers, was held in Queen Street, the cars being filled with stallholders and assistants, and led by the Garrison Band. On returning to the hall, the band played selections throughout the evening. In the concert hall varied musical programmes were given, the performers including the following: Miss Daphne Knight's pupils, Mr. Allan, Mr. McCombe, and Mr. Frank Rayher. Some tableaux vivants, concluding with a striking tableau entitled " A Summer Shower," were given, and a Maori haka was another strong feature of the programme. The concert hall was packed throughout the afternoon and evening. Further awards and results in connection with competitions held during the fete are as follows: —Linen embroidered cloth. Miss White, Burrow's Lane. Parnell: silk embroidered cloth. L. R. Syme, Queen Street, City: dressed doll, J. Atkinson, care of J. Jenkins, Abbott Street, Auckland ; art cushion. Hughes ; handpainted cloth, Miss Carter; electric lamp, Miss Spencer: larcre box. Miss Sellars:' fox terrier puppy. G. Rowlings. At the conclusion of the fete Mr. G. Henning's large motor-'bus was in waiting to carry performers and assistants to their homes. The committee also wish to express their thanks to the nurses and ambulance men who helped to make the fete a success, as well as to all others who assisted in that direction, including the New Zealand Express Companv. .Winstone.
