CLAIMS OF THE ENEMY.
TURKISH COMMUNIQUE.
London, September 24. A Turkish communique states: " The Turkish Anafarta artillery on the left wing caused a conflagration in the allied trenches. The fire raged for two hours. The allies exploded a mine near Ari Burnu on Tuesday night, but little damage was done, and the position was soon repaired. The allies near Sedd-el-Bahr on Tuesday morning vigorously bombarded the Turkish position, the bombardment being accompanied by bomb-throwing. The Turkish left wing artillery silenced the allied guns, while the fleet on Tuesday chased three Russian destroyers from coaling ports in the Black Sea. "We had successes at Anafarta and Sedd-el-Bahr. "We attacked the enemy's trenches at Anafarta with bombs, inflicting losses. Our artillery near Ari Burna destroyed enemy trenches and sank two sailing vessels laden with timber for mines."
THE WESTERN FRONT.
GERMAN REPORT. -
Amsterdam, September 24.
A German communique states : " White and coloured British troops south of the La Bassee Canal attempted to attack the German trenches, but the attack broke down before the German artillery. The Germans shot down a British aeroplane, capturing the pilot."
RUSSIANS AGGRESSIVE.
GERMANS ADMIT CHECK.
Amsterdam, September 24. A German official report says:— " We stormed the Russian positions north east of Smelina, near Dvinsk, taking 1000 prisoners. Obstinate fighting is proceeding near Wijecka. A strong Russian attack at one point was temporarily successful. We lost several guns. The enemy's resistance on the entire front of Prince Leopold of Bavaria has been broken. We reached the Serwetsche district, north-west of Kraschin. General Mackensen's advance detachments have withdrawn behind the Oganski-Jasilda Canal, before the Russian attack."
AUSTRIAN VERSION.
HEAVY RUSSIAN LOSSES.
Amsterdam, September 25.
An Austrian communique says "' the Russians, supported by heavy artillery, attacked our positions at Novo Aleksiniec, on the Lower Ikwa. They advanced eleven lines deep. We repulsed them with heavy losses. We made a counter-attack and captured the Russian position. The enemy's further attempts to cross the Lower Ikwa failed.'
"The enemy began several attacks against our Volhynian front, and reached the trenches at some points. All attacks were repulsed with heavy losses. We took prisoner 4000 on the Ikwa line. Austro-Hungarian cavalry, traversing the forest in a marshy district on the Lower Styr, captured some stubbornly-defend*d villages and successfully bombarded convoys in the Belgrade district.
