CAPTAIN WALLINGFORD.
INVALIDED TO ENGLAND.
HEART STRAIN THE CAUSE.
London, September 24.
Captain J. A. Wallingford, N.Z.S.C, has been invalided to England suffering from heart strain. Writing to his parents he says: "I tried to stick to it, but for 14 days, after having beaten off the Turks, I was crawling round my guns with a stick. I got home with the revolver, killing four, one at a distance of a foot, another at sft, a third at 10ft, and the last at 20yds. Poor devils, they were all youngsters. lam sick of killing with the rifle."
, Three weeks ago Mrs. Wallingford, who resides in Arnay Road, Bemuera, received a cablegram from her husband stating that as the result of heavy fighting he was "run down," and was "then in hospital at Alexandria. Last Monday she received a further cablegram stating that he was embarking for England. In the last letter received by- Mrs.* Wallingford, Captain Wallingford stated that he feared he would not be able to withstand much longer the heavy strain of continuous fighting and thought he would have to 'give in.
One of the most remarkable marksmen in the world, Captain Wallingford has created new records, by his work on active service. He left New Zealand as assistantadjutant of the Auckland Infantry Battalion, but early in the campaign the New Zealand machine-gun sections were brigaded and placed under his command. He was first officer of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force to be awarded the Military Cross, the only other recipient of that honour being Sergeant-Major A. W. Porteous, who was recently reported to have been killed in action.
