GALLANTRY OF RUSSIANS IN RETREAT FROM VILNA
COSSACKS AND INFANTRY FIGHT A WAY OUT.
EIGHT THOUSAND GERMANS KILLED BY A RUSE.
(Received September 26, 8 p.m.)
Peteograd, September 25Many stories are related of Russian gallantry during the retreat from Vilna. In one instance a regiment of Cossacks were cornered. They extricated themselves by brilliant daring at small loss. An
infantry regiment which was cut off fought its way to the main body through the enemy, inflicting heavier loss than it suffered, and bringing back half a battalion of prisoners.
The Germans were sometimes heavily punished for over-confidence. At one point they advanced recklessly, believing they would meet with no opposition because the Russians had exhausted their ammunition. The Russians, however, were well supplied, and lay low until the Germans had come over the entanglements in close array. Then everything was let go together. The Germans were practically swept out of existence. Eight thousand corpses strewed the field. Scarcely one German escaped unwounded.
