Wakcaxtji, Sunday. At the Wanganui Jockey Club's spring meeting yesterday the attendance was larger than on Thursday. The racing was very interesting. Only two favourites got home yesterday, when the going was fairly soft, after heavy rain on, Friday. From every point of view the meeting was most successful. Racing opened with the Owen Handicap, tor which Nones was scratched. Miacara carried most money, but Taringamutu was also heavily backed. Master Achilles, who carried 4lb over, won in fair style, after Lady Middletcn, Tree Lucerne and Glenroy had made the early running. Taringamutu finished very fast, and just beat Miacara. for second place. The ' Railway Hack Handicap was a good betting race. Coropett, Spain, Depredation and Moutoa Queen all being evenly backed. Moutoa Queen looked a winner at the bend, but Depredation took charge at the distance and won nicely- Spain had a lot of bad luck. She was running well in the early stages and then got bumped and knocked back last. Finishing veil, she got third though she was some nine or ten lengths behind at the bottom of the straight. The ten acceptors faced the starter m the Brunswick Hurdles, for which Aratiatia was made a better favourite than Parewanul and St. Gate. Parewanul raced to the front at the start and stayed there, St. Gate being his nearest attendant all the journey. Parewanui won anyhow. Aratiatia broke down and Patronymic pulled up lame. Tarero carried most money in the Hack Steeples, though both Lady Renown and Agatha Green were well backed. Agatha Green tried to win all the way, but when tackled by Tarero three furlongs from home the favourite was left with a big lead end •won by half a furlong. The winner jumped splendidly, as did Royal Patron Of the six starters in the Higgle Handicap ell but Lady Louisa were New Zealand Cup candidates and she was made favourite, Maniaroa being next in demand. Tangihou made the early running, but the field was close together half a mile from home, Maniaroa and Xanthos K»inc abreast, in front, with Bonny Helen and Tangihou close up. The order w«* the same going round the bend. Once fairly in the straight Bonnie Helen put in a eood run and finished strongly, winning in fine style by three-parts of a length. B.mksia fell a furlong from home and broke a leg. having to be\ destroyed She looked core when she went out. Bonnie Helen is still capable i ,">vement, wing a bit above herself and although she incurs a slb penalty in the' cup her form to-day was very reassuring '■ Aanthos ran well for a mile, and as he is ' also sure to improve, he may have to be reckoned with at Riccarton. Bivouac's withdrawal left seven to contest the Moutoa Hack Handicap, for which Ararat was mnde a warm favourite. Hikahakeke and Welcome Nugget were also well " ncled -, Medallist tried <° win all the way. but Welcome Nugget was lucky to get up on the rails in the straight, and won by fifth 11 * n * ra °°- AnnA fiaShS Only five started in the Marangi Handicap Sunbird being the most fancied. Sough Peroneal carried a lot of money. A surprise was in store for backers, "a Expect put fa a We run from the cut down Sunbird at the turn for home and won by three-quarters of a length corAfortably. paying a good price. Peroneal was Then rne'Vi «" *"• I«*t1 «* th * » was The curtain was rung down with the St £&? l?"*- vM 10 **', 'Weh con*£2L h l % lzhi - being withdrawn. Seadown was a warm favourite, though solid support was forthcoming for Deviation and Sedd-el-Bahr. Bivouac made the pace for five furlongs, when Seadown and Sedd-el-Bahr -Joined In, a good race resulting in the favourite winning. Marcavis had a bad passage, otherwise he might have troubled the winner.
