The recent statement of the Hon. A. L. Herdman, expressing an opinion in favour of the unification of the control of patriotic funds, was the subject of some remarks by the Mayor, Mr. J. H. Gunson, on Saturday. "The desire of the Minister that there should be some point of connection between the various patriotic funds and the Government is quite right," said Mr. Gunson, "but the War Funds Bill, as far M the Auckland fund is concerned, provides all the necessary connection. This measure necessitates an audit of accounts, to which no one will object, and which is a right and proper thing, but the Auckland fund was raised as a provincial fund, and in accordance with the decision of the executive of the Patriotic and War Relief Association . will be so administered for some years. I think it is not at all likely that the fund will be brought under the operations of the National Council set up under the provisions of the War Funds Bill. I quite believe that in several years' time this will be possibly the best course to take, but at present the administration of the Auckland fund must be entirely controlled by the Auckland executive, which is really a provincial interest, and which, I am satisfied, possesses the confidence of the people of the Auckland Province.

"The Minister refers to Mr. C. P. Skerrett's scheme," continued the Mayor. " This has been already rejected by Auckland, because, as far as this centre is concerned, there is no necessity for it. It would be placing a disability upon the fund without offering commensurate advantages. The Pensions Act and the provisions of the National Council under the War Funds Bill provide all that is required from the national standpoint. The Auckland fund exists to tender relief and provide necessaries in cases which are already extensive, and of which there will be more as time goes on. That these cases should be sympathetically dealt with on the spot represents, I am sure, the administration which the people desire for our brave men and their dependants."
