DESERT WOMEN'S DOWRIES.

The Arabian women are to be counted among the most industrious women of the earth. They certainly do a vast amount of work. They make carpets, screens for doors, work bags, horse clothing, and blankets. An Arabian girl makes all the kibitka or tent domestic carpets and other household requisites before she is married. If she' gets married without completing this task, it is expected that she will, by her own labour, refund the money which her parents have given as her dowry. This dowry usually consists of a/ hundred sheep and a certain amount of money, which a bridegroom pays down in a lump sum to the parents of the bride. He also treats his friends to a succession of horse races and other spoils. An important part is to decorate a camel with the handsomest trappings, which are sent to the bride's tent. On this she goes forth to receive congratulations of her relatives and friends. It is on this she is carried away by the female relatives of the bridegroom. She and her attendants feign to resist the act by throwing raw oats at the other .women _
