A hect.nt Gazette notice states that Sydney George Nathan, Chas. Corden Ijarniotir, Wm. Gray Young, and John Grendon Phillip*, have been appointed secondlieutenants (on probation) of the New Zealand Motor Sen-ice Corps (motor-car section). Second-Lieutenant Arthur Gilbert Quartley has been transferred from the unattached list (B) to bo second-lieutenant (on probation), supernumerary to establishment,' of the 3rd (Auckland) Mounted Rifles. Second-Lieutenant Robert Sharp Alford has been transferred from the unattached list (B) to be second-lieutenant 16th, \Yaikato, Regiment. William George Marks has been appointed second-lieutenant (on probation), supernumerary to establishment, of the Coast Defence Detachment, 3rd, Auckland, Regiment (Countess of'Ranfurly's Own). A 6cries of concentration camps for musketry training will be he.d during the next few months. (J Company 15th, Worth Auckland, Regiment, is now under canvas at He.ensville, and a company of the same regiment will go into camp at Taumarere, near tvawakawa, at an early date. 11 company will go into camp at Akikiwi later. A Squadron, Auckland Mounted Killes, will hold a concentration camp at Te Papapa in November. Lieutenant Oox will act as musketry instructor at each of the camps. H. M. Smeeten has been appointed lieutenant of the New Zealand Motor Reserve of officers. The services of the Te Puke Defence Rifle Club, with headquarters at Te Puke, Auckland military district, have been accepted.

A Gazette notice states that the services of the Auckland Grammar School Old Boys* Defence Rifle Club, with headquarters at Auckland, have been accepted.

The following temporary appointments to the permanent staff. have been made.— bub-area sergeant-major, No. 8 area (Rotarua), J. C. Cook; sub-area sergeant-major, No. 7 area (Morrinsviile), E. G. The' local territorial units are not taking advantage of the ' slack season' between the football and cricket seasons to get in daylight parades on Saturdays- Musketry practice is mostly given' at these parades. Some of the units, particularly the 3rd (Auckland) Mounted Rifles, appear to be popular with those eligible for training.

An official statement published during the month shows that the railwaymen of the Dominion have not been slow to respond to the war call. Up to date 1375 employees in this department of the public service haye either gone to the front, are in camp, or have enlisted and are waiting to be called up. • This com prises, approximately, 10 per cent, of the 14,000 railway employees of New Zealand. All branches of the service are represented, and nearly all the recruits are single men. ' The railway roll of honour is steadily growing as ,the casualty lists come through.
