FIFTY YEARS AGO.
EAST COAST NEWS. ENGAGEMENTS WITH HAUHAUS. (From the HERALD of September 26. 1665.) The schooners Hope and T&wera arrived in harbour yesterday, the former from the East Cape, the latter from Poverty Bay, bringing news up to Friday last. The Betsy had landed a company of 50 military settlers, in command of Lieutenant Wilson, at Povertv Bay, and a redoubt had been thrown up there. The Hauhaus i tad been completely routed from the I districts of Tokomaivo" and Tologa Bay and i measures taken to prevent their return. The last stronghold of the pai Marires was the Pukerima Pa. which was hourly expected to be attacked. The steamer Huntress, from Opotiki. bound to Tau rnnga. was spoken on Friday last, and 1 they reported that great skirmishing had I taken place at Opotiki. with renewed success on our side, the Hauhaus being j driven nine miles inland, and that the I volunteers were in full possession of i Opotiki and the surrounding districts, j The skirmishing was*, Roing on at the ; date of the Huntress's leaving.
