The theft of 30,000 francs (£1200), in notes and gold, from a safe -belonging to a resident caused some excitement in the French island of Raiatea on September 10. There is no bank at Raiatea, and it is said that the money was deposited for safekeeping with the resident. The safe was found unharmed,' and apparently had been opened with a duplicate key. No trace of the thief had been found when the steamer Flora, which brought the news to Auckland, left the island. The annual reunion of the New Zealand O'.ti Colonists' Association will be held on Sunday. October 10, when a patriotic benefit service will be held at the Town Hall, commencing at 2.30 p.m. The service will consist of short addresses by the Mayor. Mr. J. H. Gunson, Bishop A. W. Averill, the Rev. C. H. Garland, the Rev. R. L. Walker, and others. Music will be supplied by the New Zealand Old Colonists' Choral Association, under the conductorship of Mr. J. H. Phillpot. The city organist, Mr. J. Maughan Barnett, will preside at the organ. A -collection will be taken up in aid of the Sick and Wounded Soldiers' Fund. AH old colonists of 50 years' standing and their descendants are invited to attend.
