CHRISTIAN POPULATION OF CONSTANTINOPLE MENACED
ARMENIAN ORPHANS BEING SOLD AS SLAVES.
STARVATION AND DARKNESS IN THE CAPITAL.
Paris, September 23.
A Swiss, who has returned from Constantinople, declares that life there has become intolerable. All Christians, except Germans, have been disarmed and are completely terrorised. The necessaries of life are dear, and there is an entire absence of electricity, gas, and candles. Crowds fight for bread at the bakeries.
The police openly sell to Turks Armenian orphans of both sexes as slaves. The prices range from 6s 8d to 9s 6d, well conditioned girls being rather dearer.
The Turks have detained 400 French subjects of both sexes, and a large number of Russians and British at Damascus.
