FIFTY YEARS AGO.
MILITARY SETTLERS.
NEW 3 OF PEACE RECEIVED.
(From the HERALD of September 23. 1865.) Our correspondent at the Te Awamutu camp writes as follows:"On Saturday a telegram arrived at this camp, a copy of •which was posted up for the information of the troops, announcing that peace had been proclaimed throughout New Zealand. It has given rise to a great many conjectures as to those who intend remaining in the colony and also as to the men who intend to return home—which, by the way, I think will not be a very great many, as there are about 400 men of the 40th Regiment entitled to their discharge. It would be well to try to obtain the services of these men as a body of military settlers. The majority seem inclined to remain in the province of Auckland."
