QUEEN CARNIVAL.

TWO MORE CANDIDATES.

COMMITTEES AT WORK.

PRELIMINARY

MEETINGS.

Two more queen candidates were nominated yesterday in connection with the Queen Carnival, to be held in Auckland during the week ending November 27 next. There are now, therefore, three candidates in the field, Mrs. W. H. Parkes having consented on the previous dav to accept, nomination by the Commercial Travellers and Warehousemen's Committee.

Yesterday afternoon the second queen candidate to be nominated was Mrs. A. S. Bankart, who consented to stand as the nominee of the Licensed Victuallers' Committee. The colour selected for Mrs. Bankart's supporters to wear was pink. The committee appointed Mr. J. Endean chairman. At a meeting of the Military Committee —held later in the afternoonit was unanimously decided to ask Mrs. Wallingford, wife of Captain J. A. Wallingford, who has distinguished himself with the New Zealand forces at the front, to accept nomination as the military candidate. Mrs. Wallingford's assent was obtained subsequently, and she has, therefore, been nominated. The Military Committee appointed an executive and arranged to hold another meeting tomorrow afternoon to draw up a plan of campaign.

The chairman of the Carnival Executive, Mr. George Elliot, is urging all committees to select their queen candidates as early as possible. In the meantime, he desires the donors of large sums to withhold their votes until all the candidates have been announced, so as to avoid all chance of fear being entertained on behalf of other candidates that they will have too heavy a handicap to make up. Other Organisations Active. The Professions and Commerce Committee met yesterday and elected Mr. R. E. Isaacs chairman and Mr. H. P. Richmond vice-chairman. Several names were added to the committee and it was decided to invite a large representation of the various professions and commerce to attend a general meeting at the Chamber of Commerce to-morrow afternoon to consider a course of action.

The Combined Trades and Labour, Friendly Societies, and Tramways Committee also met yesterday and elected Mr. R. T. Michaels chairman pro tern. It was decided to draft a list of representative men in each of the three branches and invite them to attend a general meeting at the carnival rooms to-morrow afternoon. At that meeting a candidate will be chosen. In the meantime the committee decided upon the Belgian national colours red, yellow and black—to be used in their campaign.

Members of the Red Cross Committee, comprising representatives of the various women's societies and organisations, also met. It was decided to suggest amalgamation with the Suburbs Committee, with which the ladies undertook to work in cooperation. They proposed also to suggest that the Suburbs Committee and themselves should combine to support the same candidate and that the lady nominated should be known as the Red Cross candidate.

The initial meeting of the Sports Committee set up a sub-committee to arrange for a meeting fully representative of all sports bodies, to be held next Tuesday night at the Chamber of Commerce. Suggested Agricultural Show Effort. A deputation from the Auckland A. and P. Association waited upon the Carnival Executive, when a scheme for a combined effort on the last day of the carnival, ; November 27, was discussed. It was pointed out that the date in question was | People's Day at the Agricultural Show, ! and in order to avoid clashing interests it was suggested that the A. and P. Association and the carnival organisers might together concentrate upon an effort which would assist the Patriotic Fund and at the same time not interfere with the attendance at the show. Subsequently the carnival executive' agreed to ask all the queen committees to relinquish all , efforts for their candidates on the Saturday ; afternoon except at the Show Grounds. \ The suggestion is that a final concentrated carnival effort should be made at the show on the day named, and that, for this purpose, the Trotting" Club's adjoining area should be utilised, and special sideshows should be organised. A further proposal is that exhibitors at the Aiow should allow their exhibits to be disposed of at auction for the benefit of the Patriotic Funds.

The organiser of the carnival, Mr. 0. Cardston. is expected to arrive in Auckland next Monday. In the meantime the administration is being conducted at the carnival rooms in the Mines Trust building, Shortland Street, where a. growing clerical staff is kept exceedinglv busy. The executive of the association will meet the deputation of clergy at 2 p.m. to-day to discuss the objections raised bv the latter to certain of the carnival organisers' proposals for raising money.
