THE GERMAN PROFESSOR
COLLEGE COUNCIL'S VIEW.
PETITION TO PARLIAMENT. TBI TELEGBAPH. —PRESS ASSOCIATION.] Wellington, Wednesday. The Victoria College Council to-night considered the question of the retention of Professor von Zedlitz on the University staff as professor of modern languages, and the following resolution was adopted —
" That the Finance and Business Com- ; mittee, together with Mr. A. R. Atkinson, be directed to present a petition to both Houses of Parliament praying that no legislation be passed which will in-
terfere with the free exercise by this council of its functions under the Victoria College statutes."
J Dr. C. P. Knight had given notice to I move that Professor von Zedlitz be given twelve months' notice of termination of his engagement, but he withdrew it because of the action of Parliament in "threatening" the council with legislation affecting one of its servants, a procedure which, he said, was subversive of the i authority and powers of the council.
