STRONG POSITION STORMED.
ACTIVITY OF AIR FLEETS. HUNGARY WATCHING ROUMANIA FORTIFYING THE FRONTIER. TURKISH APPEAL FOR HELP. The Italians assaulted a strong Austrian position on the Plezzo slope, 29 miles northwest of Gorz, and achieved marked results. An Austrian attack further south on the Isonzo line was repulsed. The Italian advance in the Trentino is beset by great difficulties. The Austrians, although inferior in numbers, have the advantage of defending positions of great natural strength. The ground has to be won yard by yard. The Italian artillery is excellent.
Allied airmen have revenged some of the civilians murdered by Zeppelins by raiding Treves, a city in Germany, 48 miles north-east of Metz. They dropped shells on the railway station and national bank. Other railway stations were bombarded, and a moving train brought to a standstill. Hostile aircraft dropped bombs on the East Coast of England on Sunday night. There were no casualties, and little damage. German aeroplanes appeared off the coast of Kent on Monday afternoon, but were chased off by British naval aeroplanes. A Milan newspaper states that the Hungarians are feverishly fortifying the Roumanian frontier. Trenches are being dug only 300 yds from the boundary. Reports from Athens say the exhaustion of the Turkish Army is so great that the German Government has been notified that resistance cannot be continued beyond September 25.
The persecution of the Armenians is said to eclipse all previous horrors.
There hare been violent artillery duels in France- A German attack north of Souchez was easily repulsed. An Austrian torpedo-boat was seriously damaged by a torpedo from a French submarine in the Adriatic.
Count Bernstorff, German Ambassador to America, has arrived at Washington for a conference with Mr. Lansing, Secretary for State, on the Arabic Note. It was expected that the crisis would be reached to=day. Germany's refusal to pay compensation is the key to the situation.
