FITTING OF TRANSPORTS.
DEPUTATION TO MAYOR. WORK WANTED IN AUCKLAND. It was urged by a deputation which waited upon the Mayor, Mr. J. H. Gunson, yesterday, that s. certain amount of the work of fitting up steamers as transports should be done in Auckland, in order to relieve unemployment.
The matter is one upon which Mr. Gunson had previously made representations to the Minister for Defence, but in order to meet the request of the deputation, he telegraphed to the Hon. James Allen as follows : —" Representatives of the Carpenters' Union and others unemployed, waited on mo this morning, regarding the work of fitting onT transports at Auckland. Referring to your recent telegram, they suggested that the , might be fitted out here, and thus afford relief to many at present out of employment. Your telegram indicated that if this could be arranged economically it would receive consideration. As there seems no reason why the work cannot be done here as well and as economically as elsewhere, can it be arranged accordingly, particularly in view of the fact that the vessel is now here?"
To the Auckland members of Parliament, Mr. Gunson sent the following message :—" I have telegraphed to the Minister for Defence regarding the fitting-out of the —— at Auckland. A deputation -waited on me and strongly urged this. The Minister telegraphed recently indicating that this would receive consideration if the work can be well accomplished here. Kindly do what you can to hare this i authorised,'*
