FIRST JEW WOUNDED.

STRETCHER-BEARER HIT.

SCOTCH LASSIE'S MITTENS.

. The honour of being the first Jewish Boldior from New Zealand to be wounded at Gallipoli is claimed by Bailer Abraham Wachner, of the New Zealand Medical Corps, who went away with. the. main, body. He took part in the Egyptian campaign. He was acting as a stretcherbearer at Gallipoli until June 11. The Turks at this time were intermittently shelling the Army Service Corps and the mule corps. On the date named, he was hit by shrapnel bullets in the right shoulder and arm, his wounds causing paralysis of the limb. When he was in hospital in Egypt, Bugler Wachner received a note in a pair of mittens to the following effect—" To the brave New Zealander who draws these mittens over his fingers, a wee Scotch lassie wishes all good luck. - Though we of the weaker sex cannot be with you in the flesh, you may be sure we are always with you in the spirit. The mitten with the thumb to the left is for the right 3 -nd. Sit in the shade of the Sphinx an* think over that. If you still cannot find out which is for which hand, I will send you further directions if you require them of me."

Bugler Wachner said be thought he had found out the meaning of the cryptical passage in the letter, but, nevertheless, he had written to .the "wee Scotch lassie."
