HEAVY EXPORT TRADE
The export figures for July, now issued, show the usual increase over the corresponding month of last year, the value being officially stated as £1,720,149. This is £120,742 Higher than the value exported during the previous July, our last month under peace conditions. The complete export figures for August are not yet available, but it is probable, from the preliminary returns already gazetted, that the value will be more than twice that of the exports for August of last year, when our trade first began to feel the effects of so many ships being taken as transports. It is impossible to mate an exact comparison between the export trade during the first twelve months of the, war and the corresponding twelve months prior to the war, as the export figures were only compiled quarterly during 1913. It is therefore necessary to include July in order to compare the war period, thus extending the comparison over thirteen months. Taking the earlier months grouped quarterly, the comparative movements of trade can be readily seen by the following table for the two seasons:—
Total. 13 months.. £28.009,854 £26,181,683 Several steamers are now loading in the Dominion, so that by the time the September figures are gazetted, and it is possible to make a comparison for the year ending with this month, a very much greater increase for 1914-15 will be disclosed. The increase over the corresponding period of last year will probably amount to nearly £5,000,00 Q. The heavy shipments of the last few weeks have lifted the large stocks of general cargo that were awaiting opportunity of export, and for the next month or two some of the steamers taking in cargo at New Zealand ports will complete their loading in Australia. Frozen meat, on the other hand, is still being shipped in large quantities, but it is hoped that by the end of this month the accumulations in the various freezing works of the Dominion will be cleared, and space be available for the new season's dairy produce.
