RUSSIAN VICTORY IN EASTERN GALICIA.
AUSTRIAN ATTEMPT TO CROSS STRYPA DEFEATED. PORTION OF ENEMY'S FORCES SURROUNDED. Peteogead, September 1. Details of the defeat of General Pflanzer in Eastern Galicia show that some of the hardest fighting occurred on the Bug, near Baelykaman, 10 miles south-west of Busk, and 30 miles eastward of Lemberg. The enemy on Sunday morning essayed to storm Height 366, but all attacks were repulsed. The Austro-Germans were reinforced at night, and delivered five separate assaults, but were repulsed with very heavy loss. Nevertheless, the enemy made three further attacks before dawn, but was beaten back with enormous losses. Meanwhile, General Pflanzer attempted to force the passage of the Strypa at a point 60 miles south-east of. Lemberg, but was driven back, enabling the Russians on Monday to assume the offensive and surround a portion of the Austro-German forces where the Rohatyn-Tarnopol railway crosses the Strypa. capturing guns and many prisoners. The enemy on Sunday night made nine attempts to cross the Strypa near Burkanoff, 10 miles south of the railway, but all were repulsed. Attacks south of the Dniester were also without result.
