Meanwhile, General Pflanzer attempted to force the passage of the Strypa at a point 60 miles south-east of. Lemberg, but was driven back, enabling the Russians on Monday to assume the offensive and surround a portion of the Austro-German forces where the Rohatyn-Tarnopol railway crosses the Strypa. capturing guns and many prisoners. The enemy on Sunday night made nine attempts to cross the Strypa near Burkanoff, 10 miles south of the railway, but all were repulsed. Attacks south of the Dniester were also without result.
