TACTICAL POSITIONS WON
RESULT OF SEVERE FIGHTING. GERMAN REVERSE IN GALICIA NO PROGRESS IN BALTIC REGION. Il n The New Zealanders and Australians, after severe fighting, have won new ground on Gallipoli. Important tactical positions commanding the Biyuk-Anafafta Valley, in the northern region, have also been wrested from the Turks. The enemy's losses were very heavy, machine-guns, trench mortars and a quantity of small arms and' ammunition being captured. The Russians are holding the enemy in Eastern Galicia and north of the Galician border, while the main force is retiring upon a shorter front. Fierce fighting continues in Eastern Galicia to the advantage of the Russians. Military critics attach importance to the defeat of the A astro-German turning movement in this region. Nine attempts by the Austro-Germans to' force the passage of the Strypa were all repulsed. In the northern region the Germans are still fighting for possession of Friedrichstadt, which would open a path to both Riga and Dvinsk. South of Kovno the Germans have occupied Orani, 40 miles south-west of Vilna. German attacks westward of Grodno have been repulsed. A meeting of the. Cabinet was hurriedly summoned in London on Wednesday, and was attended by Earl Kitchener and other leading members. This, In conjunction with rumours of the despatch of large bodies of British troops during the past few months, and an extension of the British line in France, is regarded as portending developments in the western theatre. It is reported that Turkey is violently protesting against Roumania's prohibition of the transport of German munitions, ;:. and denounces the attitude of Roumania as unfriendly.
