LABOUR FOE THE HARVEST.

POSITION IN WAIKATO. [BY TELEGRAPH. OTO COBBESFONDEXT-] Hasecltoit, Thursday. The question of labour for harvesting crops and the matter of grain storage being provided in this country were introduced at the meeting of the Farmers' Union by a circular from the. Labour Department upon the question of the supply of harvesters and other farm labourers during the forthcoming haymaking and. harvesting season. The opinion was expressed that the Waikato -would not be. so affected by its harvest requirements as •would many places in" the South. Considerable -discussion took place on the question of the local contribution to the food supply of the Empire, and it waa contended that-the- State should safeguard grain-growers ':'. by providing adequate storage accommodation at the grain centres, otherwise the public would suffer i later on.

The union adopted the following resolution : "That the action of the Government in offering to relieve men from public works to meet any deficiency that may arise at harvest time be endorsed, and we also think that local bodies may. be able to assist in a similar manner;, that all farmers requiring labour for harvesting purposes or any branch of farm labour during harvest be requested to apply to the nearest labour agency."
