RESCUING THE FALLEN.
DOOR OF HOPE REVIEW OF YEAR'S WORK. The annual meeting of the Door of XHope was held yesterday, Mr. W. R. Wilson presiding. Before proceeding with the business of the meeting, the chairman, spoke of the loss sustained by the death of Mr. J. J. Macky, late secretary of the home. Mr. Macky had teen one of the founders of Hie Door of Hope, and had laboured year in and year out in what was undoubtedly to him a labour of love. The chairman moved that a vote of sym- i pathy be conveyed to Mrs. Ma-Jcy and i ic.:nily. In ' seconding lite motion Mr. , 11. M. Smeeton regretted that such an ! occasion should have arisen. The Matron's' Report. The report of the matron. Mrs. Hutchinson, showed that during the year 46 had t<-«i admitted to and 56 discharged from the home. Oi- those discharged 15 had gone to situations, 15 to paienls and relatives, 2 had Leer, committed, 1 bad left 011 her own accord, 11 had u l -'-* 0 !: > other homes, 1 had married, 2 had ■.con tent to mental hospitals, 2 to situations ! with their infants, 1 to hospital, and 1 had returned to her husband. Thirty-four babies had been admitted and 35 dis18 to parents and relatives. 5 to registered homes, 5 to other homer, 2 with mothers to husbands, 5 with mothers to striatums. and 4 lied died. Mr?. Th.> balance-sheet for the year showed that ti«c liabilities were £6363 4s Ed and the assets £6290 7s 3d. while the income was £E?4 15s lid and the expenditure £927 6s 2;'., a loss for the year of £32 10s J..!. The launarr account showed a pioSt v-f £105 0s 3d. The chairman com rm-nted on the fact 'that the buildings were assessed at a low figure. Plans for ,i new home for babies had l«een oremred, to cost about £9000, but the effect, of the war ttjxm the money market had p-f'ented the carry" nt out of the idea. An alternative sugee tion had been made ior a build to b- built at a coat of about £2000. But the architect's plans submitted would have c">st- about £5000 to Execute. It had therefore been nccesrary to ha' e the matter reconsidered and fresh r'-ar.s d-av.n up On the motion" of Mr. Smeeton a vote of thanks to the r S. ! and the honorary -doctors was carried, sr-ecial reference being made to the worK of the matron.
