SOAP-WORKERS' DISPUTE
ARBITRATION COURT CASE. i MEN DEMAND HIGHER WAGES, j [By TELEGRAPH.PRESS ASSOCIATION'.] Dttnt.dtn*, Tuesday. The soap-workers' dispute came before the Arbitration Court to-day. The union made a request that employers be asked to show reasons why the Canterbury award should not be extended to Dunedin, The Court had given the Christchurch award in April, and had decided that soap-workers were entitled to Is 2d per hour. Mr. Granville, for the employers, said that since the Christchurch award had j btfcn given new terms had been mt.de in j Auckland, as a result of recommendations agreed to at a sitting of the ' Conciliation Council. The employers wanted to pay time and a-quarter for overtime for the first four hours, and not for the first two hours, as demanded. The employers stood for the present rate of wages. Is per hour. Mr. Justice Stringer: Seeing that Is 2d has been granted in Christchurch and Is lad in Auckland, why should Dunedin employers have the advantage? Mr. Granville said if wages were increased it would mean the death of candlemanufacture here, .as it was already languishing. After further discussion, the president intimated -that the Court would consider the case.
