Squadron-Commander Wcllesley Bigswurth, who has just added to his previous laurels by destroying, single-handed, a German submarine by dropping bombs front an aeroplane, is another daring soldier who has made his way to the front without any oflioia] encouragement. Having served his apprenticeship in the mercantile inaiiiie he was anxious to enter the navy, but red tape of one shade and another stood in his way, and the most ! he. could do towards gratifying his ambition was to take Ins turn of service in the. naval reserve. Here, through the good olhces of a personal friend, lie was allowed to iv his hand at flying, and, showing as much aptitude in the air ii& he had done on the sea, he speedily became recognised as one of the'most promising beginners in the new field of achievement. The war gave him his opportunity, ami finally leaving the sea with a master's certificate he had no difficulty in finding a place among the airmen now engaged at the front." Two or three mouths ago he as mentioned in the cables us having, in another single combat, ac-ounted for a couple of German aeroplanes, and now he has surpassed this teat by .sinking a 'Jerman submarine. 1,, the interval he has been con stantlv employed wit), the British and l'leneh forces, and has made, many notable excursions over the enemv's counttrv.
