STUD NOTES.

BY PHAETON*. A mare that in years gone by formed on© of the Glenora Park collection, and who was justifiably erne of the most prized mares at the "Papakura estate, was Hotcherina., the bay daughter of Hotchkiss and Hipporina. The old mare was numbered amongst the defunct some years back, as was also her beautiful daughter Vittoria 'by Soult), who was reserved by Mr. Walters, in order, as he hoped, to retain the stout strain at his establishment. The Papakura stiidniaster this week repurchased Aerina-. a full sister to the defunct Vittoria. and the mare is to be shipped from Lyttelton to Auckland by an early steamer. Aerina, who -was foaled the year before Vittoria. threw a. promising colt in the shape of All Heady in her first- season as a matron : and her stud career, therefore, assumes a. promising aspect straightaway. Aerina is this season to be matted with Marble Arch. The Australian horse Robert the Bruce is advertised to stand at_ Ellerslie again this season. Got by Scottish King, a descendant of Carbine's celebrated son Wallac. from a mare by Trenton (son of Musket! and tracing on the dam s side to the some familv that produced Commotion, Wakeful. Xoctuiform, and many other noted performers, Robert- the Bruce can lav claim to a very stout pedigree, and with good looks in addition to recommend him. the bay horse possesses all the attributes making for a stud success. That Marble Arch's advance in the ■winning sires' list wc/uld have the effect of bringing a large amount of patronage to the Isinglass horse was to be expected. Mr. Walters announces in another column that Marble Arch's list is closed for the* present season.

NOTES FROM ELLER-SLIE. The beautiful weather experienced during the present week has l>een Jf®l coec *, by trainers, and operations at Ellerslte cave been interesting The main features Oi the work on Thursday morning were as foJRitasea sprinted a fast three furlongs from a flying star!. , , . Lady Jack also got to the end of three furlongs 111 gocxi time. Gold size, on the inner grass galloped a sound once round. Gold Lac picking him up at the six and a-half furlong post- ahe former was going easier than his companion at the finish. ~ , Blueform stretched out over three furlongs pleadingly. . „ . , . Although beaten pointless by Colonel boult on Tuesday last. Hadj easily accounted for Gluetai- us over a, seven furlong course on Thuisday. Hima held Genevive safe over six furlongs. Fionnuala ran the last four of six furlongs in 53$s. Roultane moved freely over six furlong!. Glissando. Dancastor. and Lucitana finished in that order over five furlongs, the last four taking 51 4-ss. Try Fluke and Loloma -were given a pipeopener over five furlongs on the tan._ Nimble foot completed a sound circuit on the sand. Jack Delaval hit out freely over seven furlongs on the sandMaui Nina and Wartime finished together over six furlongs, the former pleasing most. Toreador and Delegate were given a run. over five schooling fences. The pair gave a fine exhibition of lumping. Toreador appeared to bo going the easier at the finish. Chaminade and Marconi set off for a turn oyer five hurdles, the latter unseating his rider at the first fence. Chaminade completed the round without mishap. Black Northern and Royal Irish were allotted a sound working gallop over once round on the inner grass. On Tuesday Crispeen was schooleS over five flights, of hurdles in company w.th Inspector. The former gave a good display considering' he is merely a beginner at the illegitimate game. Inspector also pleased. Mossman. under a lisbt-weisht. ran the last four of six furlongs in 525. Pendoon, on the inner grass, reeled off four furlongs pleasingly. Colonel Soult. with Sipno for a companion. ran. five furlongs in lm 5 2-ss. the latter being of little use to the Soult horse Delenda. Tararu Jack. Brookfield. Kaimanuka, Prince Soult. Self. El Gallo, and several others aid serviceable work. The tig Helen colt in D. Moraghun's stable is not being hurried. This two-year-old shows quality, and probably the back end of the season will find him more advanced. P. Jones has a four-year-old gelding by —Folly in work. He is a big fellow, and looks as though he will require plenty I of time.

All is not right with Arran. but p.robably a few days' rest will see the bay colt back on the tracks. The useful - sprinter Goldfire is not asked to do much solid work. The Wairiki gliding looks well to the eye, but as the season advances Mr. Burke's horse will be watched more seriously. Phosphorus is still enjoying a run in the paddock, and when noticed on Thursday last the Taranaki Cup winner was in robust condition. Phosphorus will remain there until October. The four that show most promise amongst the two-year-old division are Ritasea, Lady Jack. Cultriform, and Independence. Toreador and Glissando are to fulfil their Ma-rton engagements. Both these equines have been acquitting themselves satisfactory during the past week or two. . During the present week the two-year-oida Juanna. Waiut.a. and Independence were sprinted three furlongs from a standing start, the latter showing to most advantage. finishing up a length and a-half in front ot Juanna, while Waiuta was two lengths, further back. Independence is by Benzonian from Latona, and is trained by W. Irwin. Pendoon is one of the most improved horses m Ellershe. A month or two back Messrs. Grant and Hodgson's gelding was looked on as a commoner. Since then Pendoon has -won a Bracelet, while his work on the local tracks suggests that the son of penury and Cardoon will earn distinction in much better company.
