UNIVERSITY BATTALION
MOVEMENT INITIATED. THOUSAND MEN FOR SERVICE. The question of the establishment of a university battalion for active service was discussed at yesterday's meeting of the Auckland University College Council. The proposal was made by Mr. H. A. E. Milnes, principal of the Training College, who stated in a letter that while many from the universities had gone to the front a large number were holding bacK. If each centre supplied 250 men the formation of the battalion would be assured. Professor H. W. Segar moved that the council approve of the suggestion. He said that every help should be given to the scheme. Mr. Milnes had assured the speaker that he was convinced the movement would reach many men, who, otherwise, might not think of volunteering. Dr. W. C. W. McDowell : It would be a great thing if we could only get half a battalion. Mr. (i. L. Peacocke expressed the fear that the military authorities would Inplaced in a difficult position if it was desired to retain the separate identity of the battalion. The motion was carried, and the cooperation of the other university colleges will be invited.
