TOTARA TIMBER STOLEN.
CASE BROUGHT AS WARNING.
[by telegraph.—owjt correspondent.] Paeroa, Thursday. A charge of stealing a quantity of totara timber of the value of £15, from a Hauraki pastoral run, at Maratoto, was brought against Peter McConnell, in the Police Court to-day. Mr. S. Mays, who prosecuted, said the man had cut the timber without permission, and as the offence was very frequent, the case was brought as a warning. The magistrates characterised the offence as a serious one, and said the next man caught would be imprisoned. McConnell was fined £1, and ordered to pay the costs, £6 9s. Mr. Mays said that he would also be required by the Land Eoard to pay the royalty on the timber.
