MERCHANT OFFICERS.

PROPOSED NEW AWARD.

The drafting of a new award to govern tho employment of tho officers in the Northern Steamship Company and other Auckland shipping firms, occupied tho attention of a Council of Conciliation, which sat yesterday, under the direction of tho commissioner, Mr. T. Harlo Giles. Mr. E. W. Alison and Captain R. 0. Hammond acted as assessors for tho employers. Captain W. J. Watson and Captain R. M. Cliffe were assessors for the Merchant Service Guild, and Mr. S. E. Wright, of the Employers' Association, appeared on behalf of the employers. > The proposals submitted by the guild, as the basis of the new award, represented an increase in wages of from £3 to £4 a month, and the adoption of an 8-hour day. Tho counter-proposals made by the employers were tho terms of tho award wiuib expired in November last. Jn this award there was no restriction regarding the hours of work.

The clauses of the claims of tho Merchant Service Guild wore exhaustively discussed, and the conclusion arrived at was that as tho Wellington Steamship owners' new award would have an important bearing upon the present dispute, it would be advisable to postpone further consideration of the proposals until that award was issued by the Court.
