THE ASSOCIATION GAME.

NOTES AND COMMENTS. In the senior Association football competitions on Saturday Tabernacle and EverVir « » " T «gee for their defeats by Y.M.L.A. and North Shore respectively on the opening day of the season. ~l n, the North shore and Bverton match the home side was not nearly as resourceful "»b on previous occasions. The halfbacks were off colour and the front rank lacked combination, mid. got' very little support from the middle line. Tho defence was fair, but Samson was a tower of strength. Miller in. goal gave a good display, but made one' mistake—clearing his goal by kicking when tie opposing forwarda were right on the 1 goal mouth. . Everton at, times displayed 1 good combination, but the players w.re not wall lod by Boyno. The centre-forward was at sea, with his passing to tho wings and his shooting was very erratic. Cocken and Baker played clever football. The halfbacks looked after their front rank well, and were well backed up by the defence. Altogether it was a good game, but too many dances by both teams were allowed to lapse. Adult School put up a very plucky game with Brotherhood and if the forwards hod made tho most of opportunities would hove won. The first spell was a blank ond tho three goals wore scored in the socond half. There was iv misunderstanding in rejjird to the Brotherhood's winning goal, Percy Gill was . accidentally kicked, and the School defenco made no effort to stop J. Pearson in his run for goal. They were calling the referee's attention to their back's inability to play, but the goal was scored and'allowed. It was hard luck in a way, but the team should remember that it is good policy to always play to the whistle. Tabernaclo and Y.M.C.A. met at the Domain, and aftor a good game Tabernacle reversed the score 01 the first match and won by tho narrowest margin. J. Stewart : played a prominont part and was responsible for the goal
