DAMAGE BY HEAVY RAIN..

INUNDATION AT ELLERSLIE.

LANDSLIP NEAR PARNELL TUNNEL

The heavy rain which fell in Auckland early yesterday morning caused a great deal of inconvenience in the suburbs. At Ellerslie several portions of the district were inundated. The drainage pipes apparently became blocked in the vicinity of the Anglican Church, with the result that the racecourse was, in places, covered with water. Arthur Street was completely flooded, and there was a large expanse of water on the Panmure Road. Those desirous .of catching trains for the city had to cross roads which were about a foot under water.

The Main Trunk express, which is timed to reach Auckland at 6.43 a.m., was delayed for an hour and a-quarter owing to a landslip at the entrance to the Parnell Tunnel, caused by the heavy rain. A considerable quantity of earth was deposited on the line, and over an hour elapsed before the track was sufficiently clear to let the train through. It eventually reached Auckland at 8 a.m.

A telegram was received at the Manukau County Council's office yesterday from Whitford stating that owing to the heavy rain the Whitford-Brookby Bridge had collapsed. It was decided, in view of the present financial position, to write to the Prime Minister urging that the subsidy of £700 for repairs to this bridge be authorised without delay, so that the work of repairing it can be undertaken at once. The rainfall registered in Auckland City during the 24 hours ended at midnight last night was 1.l Bin, and this brings the total rainfall for the present month to 2.79 in. There have been this month only eight days on which no rain has fallen."
