BREACH OF AWARD;
WAGES OF A LEARNER.
An alleged breach of the Auckland Engineers' Award was considered by Mr. C. C. Kettle, S.M., in the Magistrate's Court yesterday. The inspector of awards, Mr. W. Newton, claimed from Messrs. H'oiland and - Gillet, of Auckland, engineers, a penalty of £10, in respect of the employment of one, Richard Whitford, at the rate of 25s a week, instead of Is 4Jd an hour, as provided by the award. It was admitted that Whitford had been granted several increases in wages during the last four or five months, but the inspector declared that this employee was still receiving less than award rates. In reply to a question by Mr. A. - H. Mov'.'em, who appeared for the defendants, Whit/ord stated that he desired to learn the engineering trade, and was well satisfied with the treatment he had received from his employers. Mr. Mowlem declared that Whitford should really have been an apprentice A fine of £2 was imposed.
CITY COUNCIL FINED. [NY TELEGRAPH.—PRESS ASSOCIATION J CinusTCHuncii, Thursday. The Cliristchurch City Council was today charged with a breach of the General Labourers' Award by employing nonunionists, and was fined 20s and costs, the magistrate remarking that it was not a deliberate breach, but in future ho would hold the heads of departments strictly responsible.
