McConchie, of the Wellington Infantry Battalion, gives details of the death of Lieut. Hugo. He says that after two days' bard fighting Lieut. Hugo, the last officer left in this particular firing line, was shot. McConcbie, with three others, left the firing line to get him. They put him en an oil sheet and started on the return journey. ' Three of the four got a bullet each, and they had to.leave him. Stretcher bearers searched after dark, and towards UK-rain; found him dead. McConchie's bullet just missed the spine by a fraction of an inch. McConchie concludes I might have still been in the firing line if I had not gone out after our officer, who was worth the chance, especially when he happened to : be such a good man as he was." .
