( Wellington', Thursday. A letter written by Sergeant C. Gamble, of the paymaster's branch of the Expeditionary Force, on board the troopship Lutzow at Alexandria on April 29, runs as follows:—" Sunday, April 25, was the rod letter day. We were awakoned by the thunder of tho warships' guns bombarding the forts, and took up a position inside the semi-circle of men-o'-war. It was an inspiring sight to see the British) Navy in action. We had a seat in th« grandstand, as it wero, and could plainly observe the effect of tho big gun fire directed by aeroplanes. It was hard to realise that it was real warfare going on before our oyeg. I could not get it out of my head that it was only a shamfight until a few enemy shells landed too close to our boat to be comfortable. Our boys landed at 10 a.m., and many a t'ellow went over tho side jokingly remarking, 'Anyhow wo havo got a fine day for it. For many of them it was their last fine day. Wo were to land later, but the programme had to be changed. We came back post-haste here with the wounded. I never want such another experience. Among other things I had to obtain full particulars of each wounded man on board, and so had to deal with everyone of them. They aro a game lot. New Zealand need not have any fear as to the grit of her boys. Some poor ohaps were in a terrible condition, but not a 'grouse' could be heard from them."
